El secreto de sus ojos: Laughter, tears and an unpredictable ending

Last November I saw the last film directed by Juán José Campanella, ‘The secret in their eyes’ with Ricardo Darín and Soledad Villamil. When I left the cinema I thought that this film should win an Oscar. Now four months later, this film has won an Oscar for best foreign language film at the Academy Awards.

Most of this film takes place in Buenos Aires in 1990. Although no political events are mentioned, in some scenes it’s possible to see Isabel Martínez de Perón giving a press conference in front of the Government House (Casa Rosada).

The atmosphere is very real and some expressions and attitudes identify very clearly to Buenos Aires and its inhabitants - pouring rains in winter, great social life around a coffee-shop table, humour but always in a tone of irony. This film also shows the great sense of friendship of the Argentinean people when a friend gives his life for his friend.

The story is about Benjamín Expósito, a retired criminal court investigator who is writing a novel about an old murder case. The horrible crime of a young beautiful woman, the devastation of his husband and the new approach to his work environment which brings new memories of old lovers, encourages him to find the killer.

The end of this film seems predictable but that is far from true.

Very soon we will see this movie on TV. I advise you not to miss it!
